David: Neither. I was out in the desert on the weekly expats' hike and one of the locals brought out his snake collection. I wonder what one calls a person who raises reptiles..."snake rancher"? "snake wrangler"? "snake handler"? "Man of many snakes"?
The snake (this one anyway) was quite safe to play with.
In fact we have a date next week. Dinner and a movie...Snakes on a plane. Not sure what the dinner will be; probably something involving mice.
I take it you don't approve of Pullum's take on reptiles. I'm not anti-snake myself -- I've kissed plenty of snakes in my day, and I'm not talking about the two-legged kind either. This one is absolutely gorgeous. But everything I know about snakes in Arabia I learned from T.E Lawrence. Just sayin'.
For a fascinating look into the world of words, ideas and shameless whimsy, check out the Blog In Action -- a tiny subsidiary of the Words In Action publishing empire. You'll find half-baked political commentary, quarter-baked biblical archaeology opinions and al fresco marketing musings.

I don't need no steenking verbs. Especially from my alma mater.
ReplyDeleteYou went to school in Edinburgh? But I agree Geoffrey Pullum can be irritating, to say the least.

ReplyDeleteAre you talking about metaphorical snake kissing? How many legs do these receivees have?
ReplyDeleteI've moved on from snakes anyway. Lizards are my thing.
